Blog Post

Some projects stand out not just because of the work involved, but because of the people and the mission behind them. This was definitely one of those projects.

Working with Sarah from The Compost Toilet Company was an absolute pleasure. She’s a true force of nature — passionate, driven, and deeply committed to making a positive environmental impact. Her business is built around a simple but powerful goal: helping people move toward a more ecologically sustainable future through practical, environmentally friendly solutions.

The Compost Toilet Company provides high-quality composting toilet systems designed to reduce water waste and support more sustainable living. Whether used for off-grid homes, eco-builds, events, or environmentally conscious households, their products offer a practical way to rethink how we manage resources.

When Sarah approached me about updating her website, the goal was clear: create a modern, streamlined platform that better reflects the professionalism of the brand while making it easier for customers to browse products, learn about composting toilets, and make purchases online.

Bringing the Website Up to Date

The project involved a full website refresh, including a CMS migration and improvements to the site’s structure and usability. Moving content between systems can often be complex, particularly when ensuring that everything — from product information to blog posts and media — is transferred accurately. Careful planning and attention to detail were key to ensuring a smooth transition.

Alongside the migration, the website’s e-commerce functionality was enhanced to provide a smoother shopping experience. This included ensuring that product pages were clear and informative, checkout processes were straightforward, and the overall user journey felt intuitive for visitors who might be exploring composting toilets for the first time.

Maintaining the Brand Identity

One of the most important aspects of the project was maintaining the strong identity that The Compost Toilet Company already had. Sarah’s brand reflects her commitment to sustainability, practicality, and transparency, and it was essential that the new site preserved that authentic feel while elevating the design.

Through careful attention to typography, layout, imagery, and overall visual consistency, the updated site now presents the company’s message more clearly while maintaining the character that customers already trust.

The Result

The finished website is cleaner, more modern, and easier to navigate — giving visitors a better experience while supporting the company’s continued growth.

This project also highlights several areas of my work that I particularly enjoy:

  • CMS migrations and site restructuring
  • E-commerce integration and optimisation
  • Careful attention to brand consistency
  • Creating user-friendly websites that support real businesses

Helping businesses like The Compost Toilet Company present their mission online is incredibly rewarding, especially when that mission is focused on sustainability and positive change.
